Stanwell Park is situated on the South Coast of Sydney and to the north of Wollongong. The village is nestled between the mountains of the Great Dividing Range and the Pacific Ocean (Tasman Sea). A very friendly village atmosphere prevails. The township is famous for its relationship to Lawrence Hargrave, who pioneered the development of the Box Kite on Stanwell Park Beach. Lawrence Hargrave lived for 6 years in Hillcrest, a stone home in Railway Crescent which he inherited from a family member. The village has a General Store, a Surf Shop an Art Gallery and several Cafes and Restaurants. The Stanwell Park area is particularly scenic and has abundant native bird life. The area and surrounding district offers the visitor a range of recreational pursuits.
- Stanwell Park Beach is patrolled by lifesavers from September to April each year.
- A large park adjacent to the beach is frequently used for family picnics, games and barbeques.
- Bald Hill, overlooking Stanwell Park Beach, is an internationally renowned hang gliding and paragliding site.
- The mountains surrounding Stanwell Park, have many bushwalking trails, the most well known being the Wodi Wodi Track.
- From the top of Mitchell Mountain on the Wodi Wodi Track, bushwalkers can enjoy magnificent views of the coastline.
